about

Recorded in Combarbalá, Chile,
October, 2013.

This is another MOMA tape for which I have a special affection, because as I listen to it I get the feeling that I am right there with Claudia as she creates the sounds. I get to spend a precious half hour with a friend who lives far away! The first side, "Econoise 1" consists of distinct passages of improvised wooden flute melodies, Casio keyboard sounds which seem to be the echo of the flute, and mellifluous spoken word passages. I do not understand the Spanish language well enough to know for certain what Claudia is saying, but I get the impression that she is extemporizing on the connections between acoustic instruments, machine instruments, and the sounds of daily life in a kind of new "economy of noise". The second side is a more layered and collaged sound environment, with crackly buzzy circuit bent Casio SA-1, flute, voices and saxophone. It is almost as if on the first side the elements are presented separately so that we can hear them in isolation from each other as we might usually think of them, and on the second side of the tape we are immersed in that econoise world of experience.
